What Is a SUI Rate Change Notice?
Each year, many state agencies issue new state unemployment insurance (SUI) rates for employers, effective January 1. Your state mails or posts a rate determination notice showing the rate you are required to use for the new year.
IMPORTANT: Paycor does not automatically receive these updates. If your rate changes and it isn’t updated in Paycor, your SUI taxes will be calculated at the wrong rate, which can lead to fines and penalties.
When Should You Update Your Rate?
As soon as you receive your new rate notice from your state. Updating before your first payroll of the new year keeps your SUI taxes accurate from the start.
Before You Start
Have your state’s rate determination notice saved electronically (PDF or scanned copy). You will need it to submit the update in Paycor.
How to Update Your SUI Rate in Paycor
- Save your State Unemployment Rate Change notice electronically.
- Log in to Paycor and navigate to Pay > Pay Settings > Taxes.
- Select the SUI rate you need to update.
- Enter the new rate and submit the notice.
Important: Do NOT upload your SUI rate determination letter as a Tax Notice. This could delay your rate update.
Note: You are responsible for confirming the rate is accurate after it has been updated.
Plan Ahead
- Watch for your new rate notice from each state where you have employees.
- Update each rate in Paycor as soon as the notice arrives.
- Review the updated rate in Pay Settings to confirm it matches your notice.
